Tricomalee which has served Sri Lanka as an important seaport has one of the largest natural deep
water harbors in the world and is located on the north-east part of the country. The history reveals
several stories of sea battles fought at this particular place to protect the harbor form many powers who
have tried to capture this important fort especially because of the naval strategic importance. |
The fort was made a naval base after Sri Lanka acquired independence in 1948. Further there are
few more sites which could drag your attention during your visit to Tricomalee, specially the beaches
of Nilaweli and Uppuveli , considered among the best beaches in the country and very famous for
snorekelling and sunbathing. |
Swami rock, The point of lover’s leap, ruins of an ancient Buddhist monastery can be named as some
places of interest which divulge many stories with historical value and interest. |
